Psychotherapy Q & A

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a highly customizable approach to treating and managing mental health conditions and issues that interfere with your occupational, relational, or sexual well-being. It can help eliminate or control symptoms, restoring and enhancing your ability to function in your life.

Sometimes called talk therapy, psychotherapy allows you to think about and vocalize your thoughts, feelings, and fears in a safe environment. You may also learn and practice techniques to cope with negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Dr. Morrow offers individual and family therapy sessions. You may only need a few sessions to work through a specific issue, or you may need long-term therapy. Dr. Morrow can provide detailed advice following your initial consultation.

What conditions improve with psychotherapy?

Dr. Morrow incorporates psychotherapy into treatment plans for most conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia

If you already have an established and trusted relationship with a therapist, you can and should continue to work with them. You don’t have to have psychotherapy with Dr. Morrow to benefit from his expertise.

With your permission, Dr. Morrow can collaborate with your therapist to provide medication management and ensure joined-up care and support.

What are the different types of psychotherapy?

Dr. Morrow offers several types of psychotherapy. He may also combine elements of different approaches to address your specific needs. Therapeutic approaches available include:

Psychodynamic therapy

During psychodynamic therapy, you and Dr. Morrow explore the origins of your emotional distress. You discuss your memories and past experiences, including trauma. You may also discuss your thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and dreams.

Understanding the roots of your mental health condition and symptoms can help you and Dr. Morrow implement treatments and strategies to improve your mental and physical health.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT aims to identify the negative thoughts and feelings triggered by emotional stress. The thoughts you turn to in times of distress often reveal your deeply rooted self-beliefs.

Once you identify and examine your core beliefs, negative thoughts, and the situations that trigger them, you learn techniques to increase relaxation and behavior modification. CBT is often helpful for patients who have depression or anxiety.

Interpersonal therapy

Interpersonal therapy is similar to CBT. You work with Dr. Morrow to identify and modify the negative or unhealthy behaviors that interfere with your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.

You explore how your relationships contribute to and affect your emotional life and practice strategies to enhance your interpersonal effectiveness.
